Emergency motor and drive removal for Anglian Water
Gibbons Engineering Group attended the Ardleigh River Intake site on behalf of Anglian Water to disconnect and remove a faulty motor and Variable Speed Drive (VSD) assembly from a large pump installation.
The project first required careful handling and lifting procedures to be undertaken to ensure the equipment could be transported back to the workshop for further investigation and repair.
Engineers then isolated and disconnected the faulty motor from the large pump assembly. The coupling was split and left attached to the motor, ready for transport back to the workshop for inspection. Using a dedicated lifting frame, the motor was lifted clear of the pump and lowered safely onto a pump-up truck before being transferred onto a lorry for transport.
The mains supply and motor connections were then disconnected from the VSD. Gibbons Engineering Group engineers used a hydraulic trolley to remove the drive unit, which was also loaded onto the transport vehicle for return to the works.
As part of the fault-finding process, the Configurable Control Unit (CCU) card was removed from the VSD. This enabled engineers to power up the unit within the workshop environment and download operational parameters and diagnostic data to assist with investigation and repair planning.
The removal operation involved handling heavy industrial equipment, requiring safe lifting procedures and careful coordination throughout the process. The controlled removal of both the motor and VSD ensured minimal disruption to the site while preparing the equipment for detailed workshop assessment.
The faulty motor and VSD were successfully removed from the site and transported safely back to the workshop for further analysis and repair work.
