Meet the trainers

The people who deliver AEMT's training: Karl Metcalfe, Peter Rawlinson, Daud Edgarth and Chris Yeoman, with decades of hands-on experience in repair workshops, hazardous area certification and Ex equipment between them.

AEMT's courses are taught by people who have spent their careers in the repair industry: running workshops, signing off Ex equipment, building test laboratories and managing service centres. Between them our trainers bring well over a hundred years of experience in rotating electrical machines and hazardous area work, and every course draws on it.

Delegates tell us the thing they value most is being taught by someone who has done the job. Here is who you will meet.

Karl Metcalfe

Karl Metcalfe

Lead Trainer and Technical Advisor

Karl has worked in the electro-mechanical industry since 1987 and leads AEMT's training programme, as well as providing ongoing technical support to members.

He began his apprenticeship at Eclipse Electrical Engineering in York, training as a time-served rewinder and fitter and working on all types of low voltage machines, pumps and gearboxes. He moved into sales in 2011, then joined Featherston Ltd as workshop manager, where he gained experience in management and in handling medium and high voltage equipment. In 2015 he became works manager at Kirkby Lindsey, where he was also the Responsible Person for signing off all Ex equipment.

Karl delivers the Ex Repair Training course in the classroom and online, films the rewinding course, and carries out the live practical assessments for online delegates.

Peter Rawlinson

Peter Rawlinson

Ex Trainer

Peter has more than thirty years' experience in compliance, testing, inspection and certification. He started as a craft electrical apprentice with GEC in 1986 and worked his way through the levels to degree standard.

In 1996 he moved into the specialist field of explosive atmosphere safety. Since then he has contributed to the development of hazardous area standards, helped to build test laboratories, and supported many businesses with their Ex certification, zoning, quality assurance, testing, inspection and maintenance.

Peter co-delivers the Ex Repair Training course and the End User Awareness course, bringing the certification body's perspective to both.

Daud Edgarth

Daud Edgarth

Trainer

Daud is a specialist in explosion-protected refrigeration systems, with experience across the engineering design, manufacture, repair and maintenance of Ex equipment.

As a trainer he combines that technical knowledge with practical experience, helping engineers and technicians understand how Ex standards apply in real working environments and bridging the gap between design requirements and hands-on work.

He is committed to competency development and to raising awareness of Ex standards and good practice, supporting individuals and organisations in achieving safe and compliant operations in hazardous areas.

Chris Yeoman

Chris Yeoman

Trainer

Chris began his engineering career with a City & Guilds mechanical engineering apprenticeship in 1973, before specialising in lifting equipment and qualifying as a crane inspection and test engineer, working on sites across the UK.

Over his career he developed extensive expertise in electric motors, gearboxes, variable speed drives and rotating machinery, holding technical sales and management roles within leading engineering organisations, including IECEx-certified repair facilities.

Since retiring in 2022 he has continued to share his knowledge by supporting AEMT Ex training courses in the UK and internationally, helping engineers and technicians develop competence in hazardous area equipment and compliance.
