Practical training for the electrical and mechanical repair industry, covering hazardous area (Ex) repair to IEC 60079-19 and electric motor repair and rewinding to IEC 60034-23. We also offer courses for equipment owners and those who specify it. Learn in the classroom, live online or at your own pace.
AEMT has trained engineers in the repair and overhaul of rotating electrical equipment for more than forty years. Our courses are written and delivered by people who have run repair workshops themselves, and they are built around the standards our members work to every day: IEC 60079-19 for equipment used in explosive atmospheres and IEC 60034-23 for the repair of rotating electrical machines.
Most of our training is open to anyone in the industry. AEMT members pay reduced rates on every course.

Ex equipment is certified for use in explosive atmospheres. It includes motors, pumps and gearboxes used across industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food processing, wastewater treatment and offshore energy.
Repairing this equipment requires specialist knowledge. Our training covers IEC 60079-19, the international standard for the repair, overhaul and reclamation of Ex equipment, which was developed with AEMT's involvement. AEMT is also a Recognised Training Provider under IECEx, the international certification scheme for equipment used in explosive atmospheres, for Unit 005: repair and overhaul.
Courses run in the UK, Ireland and around the world. A self-paced online option is available for engineers who cannot attend classroom training.
Our flagship three-day course for technicians and engineers who repair, overhaul and reclaim Ex equipment. Newcomers and refreshers train together, with a practical assessment at the end. Available in the classroom at venues worldwide, or online at your own pace with a live one-to-one assessment.
A one-day course for the people who own, specify and sign off Ex equipment rather than repair it: plant and maintenance managers, health and safety officers, Responsible Persons and procurement teams. Learn what IEC 60079-19:2025 asks of you, how to vet a repairer and how to read a repair record before returning equipment to service.
Need to train a whole team at once? Our lead trainer can deliver the Ex Repair course at your premises, in the UK or internationally, or live online for teams spread across sites. Dates are limited, so get in touch early.
“The trainer explained complex topics in a simple and practical way, encouraged participation, and created a comfortable learning environment. This was one of the best courses I’ve attended.”
Chingiz Gasimov, Rapid Solutions
“Karl was able to relate everything in layman’s terms, to ensure we all understood, catering for all levels of experience. The practical was in-depth and gave us a good understanding of the measurements and how to apply them.”
Alec Byerley, Technical Manager, TEC Electric Motors
“This training enhanced my understanding of Ex equipment repair standards, certification requirements and safety compliance in hazardous areas, knowledge that is vital for ensuring reliability in industrial environments.”
Nadir Abbas, Field Services Engineer, Arabian Qudra
Every AEMT course is taught by someone who has done the job. Lead Trainer Karl Metcalfe spent nearly thirty years in repair workshops before joining AEMT, and he is joined by Peter Rawlinson, Daud Edgarth and Chris Yeoman, who between them bring decades of experience in hazardous area certification, Ex equipment design and repair, and rotating machinery.
Classroom course prices rise in January 2027. Book any 2027 date before 31 December and you will pay this year's rate. Dates are already confirmed for Essex, Aberdeen, Liverpool, Falkirk, Loughborough and India, with further locations worldwide to be announced.
Online courses for anyone who works with electric motors, from apprentices and new starters to sales and administrative staff who need to understand what happens in the workshop. All are built around IEC 60034-23, the international standard for the repair, overhaul and reclamation of rotating electrical machines, and the AEMT and EASA Good Practice Guide to rewinding.
Online, recorded, around three hours. Free to members; £300 for non-members
Five modules covering how to identify a motor, strip and fault-find it, apply the repair standard, understand copy rewinding and reassemble and test. Knowledge checks throughout and a final assessment.
Online video course. £150
Lead trainer Karl Metcalfe films a complete rewind step by step, from recording the winding data and removing the old coils to inserting, connecting and testing the new ones. For newcomers with basic engineering knowledge.
Two online, self-paced courses for AEMT members
IEC 60034-23 underpins AEMT's Code of Practice, and working to it is a condition of membership for companies that repair rotating electrical equipment. Understanding and Application is for technicians, supervisors and quality managers: it works through the standard stage by stage, from receiving and inspection to winding, testing, reassembly and customer reporting, so every repair-or-replace decision is made against documented criteria. Implementation is for facility managers, quality managers and business owners: it shows how to build the standard into day-to-day operations as a working quality management system, with ISO 9001 principles as the framework, so your facility can demonstrate its quality to customers, insurers and auditors. Take them together for full coverage of the standard.
If you are new to the industry, begin with AEMT's Guide to Electric Motors. If you already repair motors and want to work to the standard, go to the IEC 60034-23 courses. Members can call our technical helpline for advice on which course suits a particular role.
Alongside our own courses, AEMT members have access to training from our partner associations and to short courses recorded by member companies.
Delivered by the British Pump Manufacturers' Association. AEMT members receive a discount
Pumping fundamentals, pump selection, testing, systems, hydraulic design of centrifugal pumps, and a two-day pump repair and maintenance course.
Delivered by the British Gear Association, the UK body for the power transmission industry
Training in gear design, manufacture, inspection and failure analysis for engineers who repair or specify gearboxes.
Short recorded courses from AEMT member companies, including introductions to electric motors and bearings, dynamic and static motor testing, counterfeit bearings, and business strategy for repair companies. Free to watch.
Scheduled courses at venues across the UK and around the world, led by our trainers with hands-on practical sessions. Best for engineers who learn by doing and value time with the trainer and other delegates.
The same course delivered over video link to a group from one company, wherever they are based. No travel, and sessions can be fitted around shift patterns.
Self-led courses on our learning platform, built with the University of York. Start when you like and take as long as you need. Ex Repair newcomers finish with a live one-to-one practical assessment with our trainer.
Every delegate needs their own personal email address so we can issue access and certificates to the right person. If your shop floor staff do not have one, read our guide to setting them up.
If you have several engineers to train, membership is usually the cheaper route. Members pay reduced rates on every AEMT course, every employee of a member company can take AEMT's Guide to Electric Motors free of charge, and members have access to our technical helpline and standards portal, along with a network of repair companies in more than sixty countries, many of whom also offer reliability services.
