VSD INSTALLATION AT CONINGTON FEN PUMPING STATION

See how a targeted VSD upgrade helped modernise pump control, improve reliability and return this water site to efficient automatic operation.

GIBBONS ENGINEERING GROUP has completed a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) installation at Anglian Water’s Conington Fen pumping station, upgrading the control of two pumps to improve operational reliability and enable efficient automated pump control based on site-level conditions.

The project involved the modification and upgrade of the pump control infrastructure, along with full integration of a new VSD system.

Key activities involved in the project included isolation of a pump control panel to allow safe working and recording of existing connections before disconnection. The existing overload equipment was then removed and the control cables were re-routed to better suit the new VSD fault relay configuration. The next step was to install the drive run relay and start relay and panel modifications were undertaken to accommodate VSD integration.

Motor and supply cables were re-terminated along with glanding and termination of all associated power and control cabling. Following installation and modification works, the system was fully recommissioned.

Upon completion of commissioning, both pumps were left fully operational under automatic control, starting and stopping based on level conditions as designed.

The upgrade successfully delivered a modernised VSD control solution for Pumps 1 and 2, improving system control and operational efficiency for Anglian Water. The installation was completed safely, commissioned successfully, and returned to full automatic operation at handover.
