Member Visit - Fletcher Moorland
I had the opportunity to visit Fletcher Moorland, where I met Matt Fletcher and experienced first-hand the scale and diversity of their operations.
A business built on breadth and expertise
One of the most striking aspects of Fletcher Moorland is the range of repair and engineering services they offer. From mechanical and electrical repairs through to more specialist electronic work, the business has developed a capability that allows them to support a wide variety of industries.
This diversity not only strengthens their resilience as a business, but also highlights the evolving nature of engineering services in the UK, where adaptability and technical breadth are becoming increasingly important.
Investing in the future workforce
A key theme throughout the visit was people.
Fletcher Moorland is actively addressing one of the sector’s biggest challenges: the ageing workforce. Their strong emphasis on training and continuous development ensures that knowledge is not only retained, but passed on. This commitment to nurturing talent is essential, not just for their own business, but for the sustainability of the wider industry.
Upholding standards across the industry
A really valuable part of the visit was discussing the role of the AEMT in maintaining high standards across the sector.
There was a shared recognition of the importance of ensuring members continue to meet—and uphold—the Association’s gold standards. These standards are a key differentiator for customers seeking quality, reliability and professionalism.
The rollout of the Codes of Practice is an important step in strengthening this further, providing clear guidance and consistency across the membership.
Educating the end user
Another important theme was education, particularly when it comes to end users.
While the expertise exists within the industry, there is still work to be done in helping customers fully understand the value of professional repair, maintenance and accredited services. Improving awareness not only supports better decision-making, but also reinforces the importance of working with trusted providers. This is an area where continued collaboration across the AEMT and its members will be key.
A strong sense of community
Beyond the workshop floor, it’s clear that Fletcher Moorland plays an active role in its local community. As Staffordshire is my home, this was a particuarly impressive part of the visit.
As part of their 80th Year Celebrations, the team is currently undertaking an ambitious “Around the World Challenge”, with the goal of raising £80,000 for Dougie Mac, a local hospice. The initiative reflects a genuine commitment to giving back, something that resonates strongly across many of our members.
Supporting the next generation: #GetTooledUp
Another standout initiative is #GetTooledUp, launched by Matt Fletcher.
Through this programme, free tools are provided to individuals starting out in the industry, helping to remove one of the practical barriers to entry. It’s a simple but powerful idea that demonstrates how businesses can make a tangible difference in supporting future engineers.
A strong start
This visit was a fantastic introduction to the innovation, professionalism and community focus that exists within our membership.
It also reinforced the importance of maintaining high standards, strengthening industry guidance, and continuing to educate end users, ensuring the value of our sector is clearly understood.
A big thank you to Matt and the entire Fletcher Moorland team for such a warm welcome. I’m looking forward to meeting more members, and hearing more about the stories of the incredible work happening across our network.
