30th Annual Hack Attack Golf Tournament Benefiting The Boys & Girls Harbor in Honor of the Child Abuse Prevention Month
Houston, Texas, April 21, 2017 – In honor of this child abuse prevention month, the 30th Annual Sulzer Hack Attack Golf Tournament took place at the Golf Club of Houston, benefitting the Boys & Girls Harbor charity that is celebrating its 70th anniversary of providing residential care for at-risk children in the community.
Involving Sulzer customers and partners, 132 golfers participated in the tournament that raised one of its largest donations to date of $80,000 for the Boys & Girls Harbor, located in La Porte, Texas. This year’s winners are Matt Deely, Ryan Murray, Joseph Cantu and Steven Guillory.
The tournament has been supporting the Boys & Girls Harbor since 1994. Don Sweat, President and CEO of the organization shares: “We are grateful to Sulzer and everyone who supported this year’s tournament. Sulzer’s commitment to the Harbor goes well beyond today’s event. Their employees serve as Harbor volunteer host families, provide gifts for our children during the holidays and several Harbor alumni have been hired by Sulzer as part of their workforce. Sulzer is a true example of excellence in corporate community involvement.”
Darayus Pardivala, President of Sulzer Rotating Equipment Services, Americas, comments: “Sulzer has a long tradition of supporting the local community and we are humbled to see the spirit and commitment of our customers and suppliers in contributing to a very important cause throughout these years.”
Recent statistics from the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services showed a staggering number of 58,664 cases of confirmed child abuse or neglect during their last fiscal year ending August 31, 2016. Richard Gruen, Director of Development & Communications of Boys & Girls Harbor, explains: “April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and we are happy and encouraged to see businesses taking part this year. This is also a special year for Boys & Girls Harbor. Founded in 1947, we’re celebrating our 70th anniversary of providing residential care for at-risk children in our community."
Against this background and as a global expert in rotating equipment that thinks globally and acts locally, Sulzer is harnessing the power of customer partnership as one of its core values to contribute in upholding its long tradition of reliability, support and responsibility to the community. Some of the customers and partners participating this year are Air Liquide, Calpine, Chevron, LyondellBasell, Bailey Steel, Gorman Uniform and Alliance Printing.
As with many such events, an early start was the order of the day with the shotgun start at 8 a.m. for the scramble format that would ensure all the players completed their rounds together. After an eventful morning’s play, all those involved sat down to a buffet lunch followed by the awards ceremony.
There was certainly less drama in the run-up to this year’s event compared to last year when major flooding in the Houston area very nearly forced a cancellation. In addition to having the opportunity to play on a course that hosts one of the largest PGA tournaments in the country, the day includes other activities such as mini side games and a hole-in-one contest.
